Have you seen the video on YouTube of this guy literally dancing his way across the world? It’s pretty amazing. First, you’ve got a goofy looking guy (named Matt Harding) doing a really silly dance that most of us would not let our husbands come close to doing in public. But the thing is, he’s doing this goofy dance from literally all over the world — some of the most amazing and beautiful locations I have ever seen. He hits hot spots ranging from Zimbabwe to Madagascar to New York’ City’s Central Park. In some shots he’s alone, in others he’s got people dancing with him. In places like Mali, he has kids just jumping around enjoying the moment with such pure adulation and joy that it takes your breath away.
The back story to this is that Matt was a guy who loved to travel but wasn’t doing much else with his life. His father wouldn’t even pay for college because he thought his son was so unmotivated. I have to say if my kid came to me and said he was going to make a video where he did a silly dance all over the world, I would tell him he was nuts and to forget about it.
Not only has Matt created a beautiful piece of work — a completely unsentimental and non-cloying sense of world unity and peace, but he’s also had millions of people download his video — bringing a few moments of happiness to so many strangers. People always say follow your passion and you will succeed. I can’t say I’ve ever bought into that philosophy. I always think more practically about things. Thank goodness someone followed their dream so the rest of us could enjoy it.
