Daddy Daycare

I would take three sick children over one sick husband. What is it with men when they are hurt or don’t feel well? Why do they completely fall apart and become invalid-like? Kids are also tough when they’re sick, but at least they’re small, cute and age-appropriately needy. There’s something different about tending to a whiny, crabby three-year old (not fun) as opposed to a whiny, crabby 42-year old. I’m not sure why the mothering instinct doesn’t always transfer over.

So, my husband, perhaps on some kind of dare, decided to race someone (by running) on a sidewalk last night. I wasn’t there and don’t know all the details. All I know is that while racing he lost his balance (or something like that), and fell on his hands. The hands are all cut up, his thumb may be broken and he is generally achy. I’m sorry that he hurt himself and I wish he hadn’t, but how bad can I really feel when he was acting like a 12-year old? He is home today and claims that he can’t do anything himself because he can’t really use his hands much. So, now I’ve got two young kids to deal with along with a husband who is completely unable to literally lift a finger.

I’d love to know if anyone out there has had the same experience or if you have self-reliant spouses who actually keep a “stiff upper lip” when not feeling 100%. Do they exist?

As a mom and the other participant of the race, I feel badly. I live your pain whenever a cold, allergies (!) or a some other minor ailment takes out my husband, so am both apologetic and sympathetic.

No worries. Please don’t lose any sleep over it. The hands and elbow are much better. We’re all almost back to normal.
