Women with long nails are now complaining about the iPhone’s design, according to an article today on Yahoo!. Apparently, the phone’s touchscreen needs to connect with bare fingertips to work. Since the iPhone is the coolest gadget since the iPod to hit the scene, I’ve noticed lots of what I’d call “high-maintenance” women using them. In terms of full disclosure, I have to say that I don’t have an iPhone, but it is on my wish list. I’m waiting for the new version to come out in July. I also don’t have super long French-manicured nails — so no worries here about being able to use it.
What I mean by “high-maintenance” women is this: you see an expensive, unstructured purse, flip flops with rhinestones, manicured nails and you know there is an iPhone lurking somewhere. I know lots of men who have them as well but it strikes me as more of a “chick” gadget. It’s awfully pretty, easy to use (for most) and you can even get a stylin’ cover for it.
So, ladies, if you want to embrace the coolest technology around, maybe some things have to suffer, or, you simply have to work around the long nails issue. I’m not sure what Steve Jobs and his team were thinking when they designed the phone. Probably they were trying to create something unique, easy to use and beautiful to behold. They succeeded on all fronts. Nails be damned.

I saw this article and thought, “Oh boy, another case of people whining over stupid things.” Aren’t there more important issues in this world than whether or not your iPhone is compatible with your long nails? Life is tough. Sometimes you just can’t have it all. Either lose the nails or get another phone.

I blogged about the same thing on savvywallet.com. I think it’s kinda bogus that women are complaining. In my opinion, long nails are good for two things: scratching backs and taking off stickers.
