Cleaning up

I remember once hearing Andy Rooney of 60 minutes say that there are few things in life as good as a simple hot shower. I completely agree. I mean what’s better than the clean, relaxing feeling of having warm water run over your entire head and body? It’s hard for me to remember, however, the last time I took a shower without being interrupted or having it cut very short. I’m either rushing to get kids to school, rushing to complete something in the house, or being ousted by my kids (the most likely scenario) because they at that very moment need something.

There are times when, trying to kill two birds with one stone, I will put my four-year old daughter in the tub right next to my shower and I’ll jump into the shower while she is occupied. Inevitably, one of two things will happen while I have shampoo in my hair and am trying to rinse it out: she will either knock the plug out of the drain so the water comes out (and will yell for me to come and fix it) or, she will have to urgently go to the bathroom (and when it’s urgent, it really needs immediate attention).

I guess it will be a few more years before a long shower returns to my life. For now, it’s just a functional, speedy way to wake up and get ready for the day. Maybe one day the lure of a hot shower replete with lovely soap and some extra time will come back.
